Meanwhile, Boskovic scored 10 points on offense, including the last two of the set, for 24-20 and 25-20.
In the third set, Serbian setter Bojana Drca spiked on two for 6-5 and followed with an ace for 7-5, but the advantage did not last long. Three consecutive wins gave the United States an 8-7 lead. After 11-10, sub-in Kara Bajema scored two consecutive points with a block-out hit and an ace, sparking an incredible American run of seven straight points for 18-10. Robinson led her colleagues to a nine-point lead in the set and a 24-16 set point, which Drews converted to a 25-17 victory with a tremendous swing.
Serbia took an early 8-4 lead in the fourth set, but this is when the USA’s serve began to shine, bringing them back into the match. The second semifinal, between Italy and Brazil, will be contested on Thursday at 20:00 local time in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands (18:00 GMT) at the World Cup Boskovic MVP Player.
