“We are asking to FIBA that the Indonesian national team participate in the trials (friendly matches) even if they do not qualify for the world cup,” Perbasi Secretary General Nirmala Dewi said here on Tuesday. As a result, friendly matches between the Indonesian national team and world cup competitors would be organized prior to the start of the tournament, she said.

Despite being one of three hosts, along with the Philippines and Japan, Indonesia will not participate in the FIBA World Cup Teams 2023. The Indonesian national team failed to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2022 FIBA Asia Cup in July 2022, as required to compete in the world cup. Nonetheless, Indonesia was eager to capitalize on its chance as World Cup host, so Perbasi proposed friendly matches to FIBA.

The friendly matches, scheduled for April FIBA World Cup Teams 2023, will also include a trial at the Indonesia Arena Stadium, one of the world cup sites that is currently under construction at the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Complex in Jakarta.

The Perbasi secretary general, on the other hand, stated that her organization was unable to determine the opponents of the Indonesian national team in the friendly matches because FIBA was still awaiting the results of the FIBA World Cup Teams 2023 group stage draw and the arrival schedule of the participating teams.

“We requested this (friendly matches to FIBA) at our meeting in the Philippines, and it was agreed.” “However, (who the opponents will be) will be determined later by the (World Cup group) draw,” she said.

The draw will take place in Manila in March 2023.

“We also don’t know how many nations will play (in friendly matches) against the (Indonesian) national team since everything is supervised by FIBA, including the tournament calendar.” Thus, FIBA will pick which teams Indonesia will play friendly matches with later,” Dewi said.

The 2023 FIBA World Cup Teams 2023 will be staged in five sites in three nations from August 25 to September 10, 2023.

The Philippines will host 16 participating nations’ matches, while Japan and Indonesia will host eight teams apiece.
